How $1000 can improve health for 120 people

The Sherberghan District in Jowzjan Province, Northern Afghanistan is in need of clean water. Almost half of the villages in this region do not have a well within walking distance of their home. The women and children spend hours each day walking to fill their jugs with water which comes from swamps. This water is unsanitary and leads to many waterborne illnesses. Research tells us that 257 out of 1000 children die before the age of five, with 4 out of 5 of those deaths the result of waterborne illnesses, diarrhea and dysentery.
This year, A Better World is partnered with ADRA Afghanistan to install 25 new wells in the Sherberghan district. With local management, the cost to install a well is approximately $1000. The low cost is possible because there is a 25% community contribution for each well.
