My day started with Charles Riobaof Solar World to discuss the microcredit program for a drilling rig. We discussed the new drilling rig. He understood our concerns with the costs and will prepare a business plan. I hope to get this before I leave and meet with him.

Thank you for your interest in helping with the crisis in Haiti. This is devastating to the poorest and most densely populated country in the western hemisphere. Lives have been lost, families ruined, infrastructure, hospitals, schools and housing destroyed.

With most disasters assistance usually happens in three stages. The first 30 days is Recovery. This is when search and rescue happens and immediate needs such as food, water and medical situations are cared for. Restoration of basic services, housing and needs happens in the first 6 months. The Rebuilding stage requires long term planning and usually starts within a year or two following most disasters. A Better World Canada has most of its disaster experience in the Rebuilding stage.

Our appointment with the UN Millennium villages is tomorrow. We came a day ahead as we were driving and takes a whole day from Nairobi. We came via Nakuru where I stopped at EAMO on Saturday and arrived in Kisumu in the evening. On my first trip to Kenya this is where we stayed and visited the projects in Kendu Bay. Then it was 2.5 hour drive each way. We did that 5 days.

After my interesting morning at the immigration office with Dan Opon, getting my one year visa, permits for the girls, Chinese captives, under arm deodorant commercial in the elevator I met up with Charles. After a quick lunch Charles and I headed off to Nakuru. I had two drivers – Lawrence and Charles. I had the whole van to myself. Lawrence was going home after being with us since Dec 15. We dropped him off at Gilgil.
